  • 170 g unsalted butter, melted
  • 300 g granulated sugar
  • 85 g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 95 g all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 170 g semisweet chocolate chips, optional

  1. Step 1.Heat the oven to 350 F (175 C). Grease an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan or line it with parchment.
  2. Step 2.In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter with the sugar and cocoa powder until smooth and glossy.
  3. Step 3.Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla until fully combined.
  4. Step 4.Add the flour and salt and fold in just until no dry streaks remain; do not overmix.
  5. Step 5.Fold in the chocolate chips if using.
  6. Step 6.Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and spread it level.
  7. Step 7.Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, until the top is set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Step 8.Cool completely in the pan on a rack before cutting into 16 squares.
